Vans is a Californian brand founded in 1966 by Paul Van Doren in Anaheim. On its first day, 16 pairs of shoes were sold and custom-made directly in the store. This is still the most accurate metaphor for understanding the brand: Vans started with a direct connection between manufacturer and wearer, without intermediaries and without excessive marketing.
Skateboarding introduced Vans to the world in the 70s. Skaters chose Vans for their flat sole with perfect grip-feel on the board and durable canvas upper that withstood falls. The Era (1976) and Old Skool (1977) models, with their characteristic Jazz Stripe, became the first true skate sneakers in the world. Slip-On (1979) was popularized by Sean Penn in the movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" — and sales skyrocketed.
Today, Vans is synonymous with authentic street culture: skateboarding, BMX, snowboarding, punk music, and street art — that's all Vans. Collaborations with Supreme, WTAPS, Engineered Garments, Harry Potter, and the Museum of Modern Art confirm the brand's inexhaustible cultural flexibility. "Off The Wall" is not just a slogan; it's an entire philosophy.
